There are 24 examples, with two in each of the twelve keys. The examples are ordered in pairs since it does not make any difference whether the root movement goes up or down by six semitones, you end up on the same note. Each pair is denoted by a number corresponding to the starting key in clock notation. Thus, the first pair of examples, 1, starts in A (1 in clock notation), and moves up five semitones to D. A bass line is included, using notes from the triads (1-3-5) and occasionally the 6th, which makes a minor 7 sound. The function of each bass note is indicated as a number (1, 3, 5, or 6) above the staff. All examples are in 4/4 and consist of four bars, repeating the two chords once. Thus, the triads making up the 1 examples are A-Eb-A-Eb. All examples can be played with a pick only, without having to pluck the strings with the right hand fingers.
